Setting
An island off the coast of Devon around the 1920s

  • Mrs. Rogers fainted after she herd the voice.
  • After some searching, the characters found a gramophone that had played a record with the voice on it.
  • Mr. Rogers told of his instructions he got in the mail to play the record, and the rest of the characters told everyone else of the invitations they got to come to the island.

Chapter 4
  • The characters come to an agreement of thinking that whoever brought them to the island knows a lot about them and their past.
  • The characters then discuss the relationships they had with the deaths of the people the voice talked about.
  • Anthony Marston died at the end of the chapter. It seemed as if he chocked on his drink.

Chapter 5

  • The doctor had a syringe but it was gone.
  • The guests search each others rooms and put all of the medicine and anything dangerous locked in the pantry.

  • Mr. Blore found the syringe and smashed Indian boy outside of the dinning-room window.

Chapter 13
  • Vera walked into her room and there was a piece of seaweed hanging from her ceiling.
  • She screamed and Blore, Amrstrong, and Lombard ran up to her.
  • After they helped Vera they realized Wargrave was not with them.
  • They found Wargrave in the dinning-room. He was dressed up like a judge with wool on his head and the scarlet curtain around his body.
  • Wragrave was killed with the revolver.
  • One of the Indian boys were missing.

Chapter 14
  • Philip Lombard found the revolver in his drawer.
  • Vera realized there was a hook on the ceiling of her room.

  • One of the Indian boys were missing.

Chapter 15
  • Vera reminded Blore and Lombard about the nursery rhyme.
  • They think Armstrong is the killer.
  • The three of them go outside to wait for someone to rescue them.
  • Blore went inside to go get food. When he came outside a marble clock, shaped like a bear, fell on him and killed him.
  • Armstrong's body washed up on the beach. He was dead.

Chapter 16
  • Lombard and Vera are the last two on the island so they each think the other person is the killer.
  • They carry Armstrong's body up to the house and Vera steals Lombard's revolver.
  • Vera shoots Lombard and he dies.
  • Vera goes inside into her room and sees a rope with a noose all ready. She hung herself.

Epilogue
  • Sir Thomas Legge, Assistant Commissioner at Scotland Yard, and Inspector Maine talk about Indian Island and try to figure out what happened there.
  • Isaac Morris told the people at Sticklehaven that there was an experiment going on down on the island, so no one went there to save the characters. Then Isaac died by taking an overdose on sleeping stuff.
  • The notes the guests took were found on the island and used to try to guess what happened.
  • They knew the order of how the guests died up to Wargrave. However it couldn't have been armstrong because his body was dragged to the house. It couldn't have been Blore because he couldn't drop a marble clock on his head. It couldn't have been Lombard because he was shot and the revolver was inside. It also couldn't have been Vera because they chair that she stood on wasn't kicked over it was neatly pushed against the wall.
  • No one was seen leaving the island so the killer could not have gotten away.

Manuscript
  • There was a bottle with a confession in it found by the fishing trawler Emma Jane.
  • The note was written in first person by the killer.
  • It said that they have presided over a court of law and that crime and death has always interested them. However they never believed in killing an innocent creature.
  • After a while the person decided they needed to commit a crime of their own. The person realized that there were some cases that the law could not reach and that was why he/she decided to choose those people because they were not innocent.
  • It explains about how he/she killed everyone. It said that they tricked Dr. Armstrong into helping him pretend to be dead. He/she explained their fake death, which was the same as Justice Wargraves. Therefore the killer was Justice Wargrave.
  • He then descried what happened in the rest of the book.
  • After he was done writing the note he was going to put it in a bottle and throw it in the water.
  • Wargrave then used the gun and an elastic band connected to his glasses to shoot him self and make the gun fly back into the hallway.
Excellent summaries, Jack! What about the climax? Any guesses? Since a climax is the turning point of a story or a novel, when did that turning point occur? Most people think it's when Vera hangs herself, but that is predicted in the poem, so it's almost anti-climactic. When does chaos and confusion first start? When do characters get skittish and not trust each other? Once you have figured that out, you will see that everything else is falling action which leads to the manuscript (resolution) where all the unanswered questions are wrapped up nicely for the reader.

Four examples of forsight (foreshadowing) in chapter 2

1) "Remember this island when I was a kid. Never thought I'd be doing this sort of job in a house here. Good thing perhaps, that one can't foresee the future...." (page 36)

There are many examples of foresight in this book, especially in chapter two. This is a good example of one of them. It infers that something bad will happen in the future. Who will be involved in this misfortune, I do not know. The person saying this, Mr. Blore, states that it is a good thing that no one can see the future, allowing him to hopefully get away with something he is plotting.
2) "She looked like a women who walked in mortal fear...." (p. 29)

This could possibly be an insight into her past. It is possible this could be inferring that she is either hiding something or she is regretful for something. This is because it said she "walked in mortal fear" witch makes me believe she has possibly murdered someone in the past or she did something bad that is making her act in such a way.

3) "The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. The Lord is known by the judgement which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. The wicked shall be turned into hell." (page 38)

This a great example of foresight. It may be telling us that this could happen later in the book, someone on the island might die. The person who does wicked acts, will get punished for his or her works. This would result in the murderer going to hell. This also could be telling us that someone who is
trying to plot a murder could get caught.

4) Ten little Indian boys out to dine;
One chocked his little self and then there were nine.

Nine little Indian boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself anfd then there were eight.

Eight
Ten little Indian boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were nine.

Nine little Indian boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and then there were eight.

Eight little Indian boys travelling in Devon;
One said he'd stay there and then there were seven.

Seven little Indian boys chopping up sticks;
One chopped himself in halves and then there were six.

Six little Indian boys playing with a hive;
A bumblebee stung one and then there were five.

Five little Indian boys going in for law;
One got in Chancery and then there were four.

Four little Indian boys going out to sea;
A red herring swallowed one and then there were three.

Three little Indian boys walking in the Zoo;
A big bear hugged one and then there were two.

Two little Indian boys sitting in the sun;
One got all frizzled up and then there was one.

One little Indian boy left all alone;
He went and hanged himself and then there were none.
(page 31)

This poem is a good example of foreshadowing. The poem states all the Indian boys will slowly disappear. Their are ten Indian boys in the poem and their are ten people on the island. Also the people in the poem are Indian boys and the island in called Indian Island. I predict that all the people on the island will disappear slowly just like the poem. Most of the people on the island will die because that is what happened in the poem.
Your group chose wisely. All examples are definitely foreshadowing events to come. Watch your use of 'there' and 'their' and 'which' and 'witch'.

how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?

There are many differences between a mystery novel and a narrative. A mystery novel is a story involving a crime and an investigation, while a narrative is a story that describes a sequnece of events. In a mystery novel there are many twists to the story. There can also be twists in a narrative but not very often. Also, mystery novels are usually very suspensful and keep you on the each of your seat. Once again, narratives can also have this, but it does not occur very often. These are just some of the differences between a mystery novel and a narrative.

how might the title be a clue to the story?

The title, And Then There Were None, can be a very helpful clue to the story. It infers that some of the characters in the story will somehow depart from the others, which could be through death. It could also be through other ways wheather they are forced to leave or if they vanish. If they do vanish I am wondering if it would be on purpose or accident. This is just a predication that I am making, but I think it is a very good hypothesis byjust reading the title.

Interesting explanations. Both types of writing can have twists; mystery novels do often add more suspense.
